I have decided to introduce a guest contributor to Observing Japan.

Noah Smith is a Ph.D. student in economics at the University of Michigan, where he specializes in urban economics and macroeconomics. He has previously worked as an editor and research assistant in the economics department at Osaka University.

In light of the global financial crisis, I think his expertise will be a welcome contribution to the discussion at this blog.
